This blog is predominately about camera trapping in California. We camera trap to save our souls and to teach primary school students about biology and conservation. We will also touch on other camera trapping news and musings, sets from afar, mediocre herpetology, sucky birding, and other natural history discussions.

Another Big Buck
Not sure if this is the same guy I photographed two years ago (probably not), but he is a big one. He was standing by the side of the road on campus as I was heading into lab this past Saturday, but I only got the images on my computer tonight.
My guess would be a fence. At first I thought it was a gland showing itself during the musk, but from the little I can find the dorsal gland on blacktails is quite small. But bucks in musk do really stupid things. I guess we can always pretend it won a battle with a Mountain Lion :)
That is a nice buck. I like your thinking on the scrape on his back too. I wonder if they ever really "win" battles with lions, or if they only just survive, ala this sad looking fellow.
seems completely unconcerned with your presence. he's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the injury on his shoulders is from.
